OUR FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY

Belair National Park Holiday Park is committed to ongoing sustainability improvements and remaining environmentally aware as a basis for all of our decision making. We believe that every small decision now can make a difference to the bigger picture, for our future and for future generations.

The Belair National Park is an attractive stop for local, interstate and international visitors looking to experience nature. However, the tourism industry is also collectively responsible for approximately 8% of the world’s total CO2 emissions. A large portion of this (nearly half) is produced through transportation of tourists to and within destinations. Negative impacts on our surrounding environment also have a negative impact on guest experience.

Belair National Park Holiday Park is aiming to reduce our negative impact to a Net Positive result by 2035. By reducing and offsetting our carbon emissions, we can feel comfortable that we are doing our part in reducing the portion of this % that we are in control of.

We aim to give our guests a fun and relaxing holiday – to enable them to escape and connect with nature, without cost to the surrounding area and the environment.

Current Initiatives

Some of the Environmental Sustainability practices that we have implemented to date under current ownership:

  • Replacement of petrol-powered housekeeping vehicle and grounds keeping equipment with battery powered models
  • Increase in solar power usage and replacement of 90% of street lights within the park to solar
  • Removal of small, single use toiletries offered within accommodation and replacement with large bottles
  • Supplying linen only for the number of guests booked into rooms, rather than for all accommodation bedding. This encourages people to think twice about requesting extra linen. Let's face it, no one usually launders their towels and sheets after each use! This reduces the overuse of linen and need for unnecessary laundering and drying of linen and towels
  • Terracycle recycling for all items that can't be recycled roadside as well as signs indicating to in house guests where to place these items for recycling
  • Prioritising the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle ethos. Extensive improvements have been made within our park over the recent years and where possible, all furniture, buildings and equipment are repurposed, sold or donated for reuse.
  • As part of our daily decision-making model - the recycled or recyclable nature of products is considered prior to all purchases. All new structures are built with either recycled, recyclable (or both!) materials.
  • When seeking suppliers, we are prioritizing purchases from both local business and companies that share our environmentally sustainable philosophy, buying our regular guest amenities from Zero Co (www.zeroco.com.au) and About A Dog ( www.aboutadog.com.au )
  • The introduction of DC ceiling fan use in new accommodation, using less power by up to 70% compared to standard AC fans.
  • Provide composting / green waste and recycling options for guest use in all accommodation and communal areas.
  • Synchronization of staff start and finish in working times to encourage car pooling between staff.
  • Provision of public transport timetables and maps to guests, to encourage the use of public transport into the CBD. We also offer lifts when available, to and from the train station to help reduce road traffic and carbon emissions.
  • Guest information, forms and maps all easily available electronically to help reduce paper usage.

Local Community Support Initiatives

  • Sourcing and display of local Aboriginal artwork in accommodation for guests with the option for purchase if desired - all proceeds going direct to the Aboriginal Artist.

  • Support of local small business through recommendations in our online compendium of local wineries, produce suppliers and markets.

  • Our own sourcing of kiosk stock direct from local manufacturers and small business (where available).

  • We donate a % of rent each year towards the Friends of Belair National Park, who do wonderful work in maintaining and preserving the Belair National Park so that it can be enjoyed for generations to come.

  • Donation to and sponsorship of local community groups and schools.

Our commitments into the future

Waste management

As a park, we commit to reducing landfill contribution by sourcing products that are recycled and repurposing or recycling at the end of their useful life, promoting a circular economy. We will continually strive to improve on waste management solutions and commit to providing various options for recycling in an effective / easy to use manner to encourage recycling by all guests.

Local community

We will continue to give primary focus to purchasing from and engaging local Adelaide Hills shops and trades. We will continue to promote and encourage our guests to purchase produce, arts and crafts from within the Adelaide Hills Region and recommend local business in order to further foster relationships and support the Adelaide Hills community. We will continue to donate to selected local community initiatives on an ongoing basis.

Tourism

We will continue to encourage responsible tourism practice by our guests through promoting an understanding of the local history and culture of the Belair National Park. We will increase the size of our current conservation vegetation area with a native species information system for guests to encourage interest participation in nature conservation. We will encourage responsible use of our park facilities and amenities to help minimize environmental footprint caused through tourism to the area.

Property conservation

We are committed to conserving the property and surrounding national park through the continual review and implementation of measures to improve our property’s biodiversity. We will continue to rehabilitate originally cleared land and revegetate it with native species.

Local area conservation

We will participate in nature conservation and contribute a portion of rent each year to the Friends of Belair National Park, who do wonderful work in maintaining and preserving the Belair National Park so that it can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Reduction in carbon emissions

At each asset purchase / replacement, we will continue to source equipment and vehicles that have a lower carbon emission or are hybrid / electric powered. We will install an EV charging station to make it easier for those with more environmentally sustainable modes of transport to visit the park. As well as offering lifts to the train station, we will source some heavy duty bike locks for guest use to enable them to ride to the local train station and feel confident leaving their bikes chained there while taking public transport into the CBD. As tourist travel contributes significantly to CO2 emissions, we aim to make it possible that during their stay, they can reduce their travel around the area as much as possible. Future park planning also involves increase an in solar power generation and continual reduction in the use of fossil fuels.

Environmental Reporting

We are committed to continuous improvement in environmental sustainability and will look to implement an environmental reporting system and carbon audit within the next few years to improve transparency to stakeholders, guests and the local community. We will also look to decrease carbon emissions through educating and involving our guests in resource conservation while staying in the park.
